Male or Female Maltese

I always thought that I preferred the females until I had a male Maltese. The information below is the norm. Depending upon the personality of the puppies, it may differ.

Topic for Discussion........Male Maltese vs. Female Maltese

The answers come from pet owners and breeder/exhibitors. We own the internet list for reputable Maltese breeder/exhibitors all over the world. The pictures are two of our boys that were bought to keep each other company.

Which sex in the Maltese do you prefer for a pet and why? I guess those of you that have owned a boy and a girl could really answer this.

Would love to hear of your experiences with the different sexes.

Also, do you find the males harder to potty train?

Thanks!

Phyllis Burnette

Males definitely. They are more loving and protective. All the males I've ever had have been sweethearts.

Subject: Bentley

Hi Phyllis and Joe,

As I am typing, Gidget is sleeping on the bed, Lily is sleeping in the donut bed and Bentley is curled up right by my feet. When breeders ( yourself included) told me boys were sweeter, I really could not believe how that could be. I still think each dog is different and Lily and Gidget as well as Ivory are all sweet in their ways but Bentley is so warm and loving. He wants your attention always, anytime and for as long as you will give it. He wags his tail the entire time you hold him, talk to him, coo over him, whatever. Lily will wag her tail until you give her what she wants and then she is done with the effort of it. He sleeps right on my pillow all night, curled around my head, most of the time with a paw on my forehead. Had I not been open minded enough to consider the possibility at Michael's request, I would have missed him. That would have been a huge loss for me. He is the sweetest, most loving, most enduring little guy. I know lots of people want girls to dress up, but I have found just as much for Bentley as for Lily and Gidget. He is every bit as cute dressed up, in his little black t-shirt he looks so stinking cute! Never again will I assume that I want a girl right off the bat. When I met him, I knew and I think if you want a companion, let your heart be open to the possibility that he may be the one to really steal your heart. Thank you for letting me have these wonderful Ga-Li puppies

Easy for me...My boys bonded instantly with me. Jason cries when I sniffle! He can here me clear across the house...even if I am watching TV (Extreme home make-overs usually...) and I get emotional......he comes running to check on me! ON THE OTHER HAND...we have Mollie e~she loves us, of course, but ONLY when it is convenient for HER...more stubborn and independent...she loves everyone that come over, not saying she isn't friendly, but she just isn't clingy like the boys! I think everyone needs one of each! There you have it Joe...THAT would fix everything!

As we grew up, Mother always had male dogs.
I'll never forget the loyalty of Teenie, a Chi mix, who stood guard over my grandmother, who was paralyzed from a stroke. Yet he was everyone's big lil man.
As my daughter was growing up, we bought a male Cairne Terrier, neutered. Seymour was best friend to all my daughter's friends. And Beth's bed buddy.
Then I started the Maltese craze, as I gradually brought my first 3 Malt puppies into the home, Seymour was the teacher, the leader, and ever so gentle with the pups.
He made it so easy to house break the Malts, they would follow his lead. Bless his soul, we lost him this past year.
Having both male & female Maltese, you can tell the boys are mommy's boys! The girls, on their terms, when they feel like it.
Another scenario, from small breeds to large, my neighbor Lily has male & female English Mastiffs...HUGE!!!!
The male is a gentle giant with an excellent loving temperament, one she can trust, with house guests. Her female is unpredictable, and is put away, in her bedroom, so that I, or anyone can enter her front door.
So, I have to say, in any breed, the male is my pick.
Hugs,
Nancy

This is from someone that got two Ga-Li boys.

Puff & Comet!

Howdy, my daughter figured out how to use the digital camera, so she put this together this afternoon. We are having a wonderful time with our boys!

I like the boys the best because I find them to be sweeter. The girls are more "me, me, me," and the boys always seem to be out to please their human. As for the potty training, I think they are about equal, unless, of course, the male has been left in tact to breed.

As a companion I prefer the boys. I find that the boys live their life wanting to please you whereas the girls are a little more independent and head strong. I don't find any differences with their toileting until they are older. I find as the girls get older they get lazier and can't be bothered going outside. I have less trouble with my older boys. The only time I have trouble with the boys going to the toilet inside is when I have bitch in season.

If I could have babies from boys, I'd have a house full of them. I find them more affectionate and sensitive and eager to please.

JMHO,
Lyn.

I would back you up Lyn with the boys, I would have the house full of them too.
Doesn't mean to say I don’t like the girls ,I have just lost my very special little girl of 10 1/2/ yrs. last week ,and I am heartbroken, I miss her so much.

It is just that the boys and girls are different ,I love them all but have preferences.

Trudy

I much prefer the boys to show. The boys are sweeter and more eager to please. Both are about the same to potty train.
Carolyn

I personally will take a boy over a girl most days of the weeks. i find them sweeter, easier to train, more loving, and I am the center of their world. With my girls they are the center of their worlds and I am the maid!
Josy

I love my boys! And my boys love me!
I see no difference in potty training, other then when I have a girl in season.
Then it is time for the belly bands.
Linda

I like my girls, , although I do have a male cocker spaniel (neutered) that has never marked.

Lori

i really love the boys,,,,,,,,,,,,,
but need the females,,

Since I haven't had a girl house-dog, I can only speak to my baby boy, Mr. Ga-Li’s Mozart, the Maltese, who is the ultimate companion. He is loveable although he likes to lay against my leg in the recliner and not in my lap. At night, he sleeps against my back until Wayne gets up in the middle of the night to go to work. Mozart then moves over and curls up against Wayne's pillow.

When I have been gone for a while he meets me at the door and leads me to his potty pad to show me what he has done since I left. After his treat, if I pick him up, he gives me lots of kisses.

When I am gone for an extended period of time, like when I was hospitalized for several weeks, Wayne calls me and puts the phone to Mozart's ear. As I talk to him, he licks the receiver and gets really still. When I came home for the hospital, Wayne had to pick him up for me 'cause he was all but walking on my feet and preventing me from taking a step. We kissed and kissed and then kissed some more.

Also, he wasn't hard to potty train.

Sandra

For me, there's no contest. Males are so loving and precious. I've had many years of both sexes, and as far as I'm concerned, the boys seem to adore their owners and bond more quickly than girls. I love 'em all, but there's nothing like the love a little boy has for his owner!

Carolyn

After we discovered it would be nearly impossible to get to little girls from the same litter, we decided one of each. (i have never had a male). These are only my third and fourth puppies. I knew that if it was meant to be I would feel a connection to a puppy and I do and did the minute he came up to me. He is such an outgoing little guy. Our little girl requires a little extra warm-up time. She is unsure of other people and although he likes everyone you can tell he is all ours. When I talk to him, he is so excited and when Michael gets home from work he is thrilled beyond belief. No more difficult in potty training and I think he may be a little easier even. I think a lot of people want girls for the bows and clothes and cute little stuff, but I have found plenty of stuff for our little man and it has not been any less fun to buy cute things for him than for her. He is amazing.

PS, Phyllis, Lily is awesome too.

Phyllis's interview was more intense (humor). Then she wanted me to think about a mate to go with the little girl and I was like no way! Then my eyes met his! I knew I had to try it. Well, it's been 3 weeks, and we have went through so many phases. All to the good! I was partial to little girls but didn't know how much the boy's are "moma's boy's". He has become t

I try to rotate my Maltese giving them all a chance to sleep with us. But I always want the boys to cuddle . They cuddle when you want them to cuddle with you. The girls are more independent and will cuddle with you when they want. The boys are almost always more affectionate. I don’t find any difference in potty training. The boys just seem to worship you and stare into your eyes when you are talking to them.! And I hate to let them go. Of course, I love the girls too!
